I Hate Sam Keller
Former Nebraska and Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller is suing EA Sports. He brought a suit claiming that EA Sports used student athlete’s names and likenesses in a commercial venture, thus violating an NCAA rule. Keller’s main argument is that the rosters for teams in EA’s NCAA 09 are similar to those of the real life teams. So similar, that a player’s number, height, weight, hometown, and even skin color are the same in real life as they are in the game.
Now I hate to see student athletes exploited, and it is bad enough the schools make millions of dollars of these kids, but I’ve been playing video games my whole life and if Sam Keller ruins college football video games for me I’ll be pissed. Having the rosters on these games resemble the real team is half the fun. What’s the point of playing if my video game Taylor Mays can’t intercept video game Jimmy Clausen, or if I can’t sack video game Tim Tebow.
